Service Description: The Arctic Base Map provides coverage for 35 degrees North Latitude and above. It is the result of value added processing of the following data sources: (1) Global Digital Elevation Model (GTOPO30) represents gridded 30 arc seconds (+- 1 Km) elevation for the world. These data were by developed by the USGS EROS Data Center in 1996 from a variety of data sources. (2) Global Digital Elevation Model (ETOPO2) represents gridded 2 minute by 2 minute) elevation and bathymetry for the world. These data were derived from the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) ETOPO2 Global 2' Elevations data set from September 2001. Symbology and transparency settings were established using ArcGIS ArcMap software prior to exposing the service.

Layers: Description: This shaded-relief image was created by J. Varner and E. Lim, CIRES, University of Colorado at Boulder. The image was created from ETOPO1 Ice Surface (cell-registered). The image was created with Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) [http://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/] using three color palettes: blues for ocean depths and above sea-level lakes; greens and browns for dry land areas; and shades of white for the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets and glaciers greater than 100 km2 using the GLIMS Glacier Database [http://nsidc.org/glims/] at the National Snow and Ice Data Center [http://nsidc.org/index.html]. More info on the development of ETOPO1 dataset can be found at http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/global/relief/. The image was clipped at 35 degrees north and reprojected to a North Pole Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area projection by the Arctic Research Mapping Application (ARMAP) team [http://armap.org]. The web mapping service is hosted by the Systems Ecology Laboratory (SEL) [http://sel.utep.edu] at the University of Texas at El Paso.
